LeAnn Hughes

District 15

West Council Bluffs and Carter Lake

Endorsement: LeAnn Hughes

Our take:

LeAnn is a hard-working, small business owner who exemplifies Iowa values. She is out door-knocking her heart out and making the case to replace Charlie McConkey. Charlie McConkey stood against HF-517 and the Freedom Amendment. The people of Carter Lake and Council Bluffs have a chance to have their voice in the Iowa House stand up for their Second Amendment rights and give them the opportunity to vote to add the right to keep and bear arms in the Iowa Constitution.

Interview

IFC: Why are you running for Iowa House?

LeAnn Hughes: It's time for us to get our base together in Western Iowa. President Trump has energized a lot of voters with the booming economy and our countries success. People are coming out of the woodwork with excitement about how things are improving under our current leadership. Charlie McConkey has stood against our values and the programs that are working. I've never been in politics before. I own a small business here in Council Bluffs, and I have been watching these No votes, especially on the gun issues from Charlie McConkey and thought it was time to stand up. I would vote to uphold our Second Amendment in Iowa.

IFC: What are your thoughts on the 2017 Omnibus Bill and the Freedom Amendment?

LeAnn Hughes: Permit privacy was necessary, that should be important. I thought those changes were remarkable. I thought Matt Windschitl did a great job taking charge in the House. The right to keep and bear arms should be in the Iowa Constitution. We need that change, and we will make that.

IFC: How do you feel about future Second Amendment issues coming before the Iowa House?

LeAnn Hughes: I can't stand going into the courthouses without the right to carry. We need to start letting people in the schools. Gun-free zones need to go, and the current school administrators are standing in the way of what Iowa law already allows to keep our kids safe in their school. Nobody should go to jail because they have a gun on them when they pick up their kids or grandkids from school. People may not have time to run back home or to deal these hurdles. Besides, I like to have my weapon on my person. We need to add the right to keep and bear arms in the Iowa Constitution.
